Biology 12

Biology 12 is a comprehensive course that will reintroduce students to topics they have seen in previous Science courses but in much more detail.  The vast majority of the course deals with the human body from a biochemical and physiological point of view. Students will gain a broader insight and deeper appreciation for how the human body functions.  The first term is spent looking at the biochemistry of the human body by investigating Biological Molecules, DNA and Protein Synthesis, Enzymes, Cells, Cell Membranes, Cell Transport and the role water plays in our bodies.  The remainder of the course is spent looking at each body system in significant detail starting with the Digestive System and ending with the Reproductive System.

An alternative approach to studying the digestive system will take place this year as Gladstone has partnered with the University of British Columbia in a first-of-its-kind initiative at the high school level.  More details to be provided in the coming months.

Biology is a vocabulary driven course and an understanding of the basic terminology is essential for success. Nelson Biology will be the textbook assigned to you but much of the content will be introduced through supplemental material provided to you in class or online.

Marks will be gathered from a combination of formal assessment (tests, quizzes, projects, labs) and informal assessment (homework, lab procedure, etc).  Marks will not be separated by category, a mark from a test is equal to a mark from a homework check.  A final exam worth 20% will be administered at the end of the school year (June 2011) along with an optional provincial exam worth 40% of the total.

One major animal dissection will be conducted to conclude the course.  It is expected that students will participate in dissection labs, either through direct participation or observation.  If for personal reasons you are unable to do either, a make-up assignment will be made available to you.

I am available by appointment or during office hours for additional help or to make up missed assignments. You are also welcome to e-mail me if you have any questions that require feedback outside of school hours.
